Why Croatia Needs to be on your Bucket List this Year

What country comes to mind when you combine Mediterranean islands, ancient cities, breathtaking national parks, and rolling hills dotted with vineyards?

Greece?  Or maybe Italy? Those might be your first guess, but would you be surprised if we told you I was talking about Croatia?  To the east of Italy, the lesser-known country of Croatia is popping up on everyone’s radar and for good reasons!  It boasts a perfect Mediterranean climate, less crowds than Italy and Greece, and has a wide range of activities that’s sure to appeal to travelers from foodies to hikers.  I’m here to introduce this dynamic country to you and explain a few ways you can get an island getaway, historical significance, and the most beautiful nature all in one destination.

So, Croatia, what is this country all about?

Often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Croatia is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and beautiful islands.  These islands are also referred to as the Dalmatian Islands. They are made up of 1,200 small islands dotting the Adriatic Sea.  Some are tiny and uninhabited which you can visit via boat trip, but there’s plenty of larger island options should choose to stay/spend more time exploring them.

Hvar

One of Croatia’s largest and most popular islands – is ideal for those seeking charming ancient towns (think a medieval town squares and Renaissance cathedrals), beautiful beaches, lavender fields and a vibrant nightlife.

Brač

While Hvar tends to be a glitzier island, Brač has similar characteristics, but is known more for its rich history (it’s been inhabited since the Neolithic Age), watersport adventures, incredible views from Vid’s Mountain and of course, it’s beaches.

Korčula

Allegedly the birthplace of Marco Polo, features a medieval-walled peninsula, a Gothic-Renaissance cathedral, and hills filled with vineyards and olive groves.

Those are just a few of the gems you’ll find within the many Dalmatian Islands.  Not sure which one to visit?  The best way to decide is to work with us to tailor your experience based on what you love!

Next up are the areas for my history buffs: Croatia has a long and storied history starting with occupation by the Neanderthals to the Greeks and Romans, and the Croats to the Venetians.  After WWII, it became part of Yugoslavia and gained full independence as a country in 1991.  Traces of the country’s history can be found in the ancient towns such as Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar.

Dubrovnik

A UNESCO-listed Old Town set within medieval walls and is well-known for its vibrant culinary scene and movie buffs will recognize it as the King’s Landing from the Game of Thrones

Split

the second largest city in Croatia, and has a unique immersive feel to it with modern shops, cafes and homes built around the ancient Roman structure of Diocletian’s Palace.  It also serves as a gateway to some of the top islands we talked about – Hvar and Brač.

Zadar

Croatia’s oldest, continuously inhibited city dating back to the 4th century. Its home to contemporary innovation set against Roman ruins and is a little more off-the-beaten-path than Dubrovnik or Split, giving it a more relaxed and less touristy feel.

Fun fact for nature lovers: Croatia is home to a total of 8 national parks! A few popular are Plitvice Lakes National Park, Krka National Park and North Velebit National Park. Both Plitvice and Krka are well known for their waterfalls, while Plitvice – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – also features terraced turquoise lakes formed by travertine barriers. We dare you to Google photos and decide not to experience it yourself! Once you’re done chasing waterfalls, consider a visit to North Velebit National Park which is known for its rugged mountains offering a unique trekking experience.  With eight national parks spread throughout the country, we can help you tailor your itinerary to pair a visit to a city like Split, Zagreb or Dubrovnik with a national park so that you can have the perfect mix of history and nature.

Is wine more your vibe?  Wine is probably the last thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Croatia, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that it’s full of centuries-old vineyards.  Most will include small batch wine, but with 130 grape varietals and four main regions, you’ll find anything from dry white wine to dessert wines to red wines.  Although each region is distinct geographically, there is one common theme with Croatian wine country: they have some incredible hotel options. Most are renovated historical structures, but each provides interactive and unique experiences to fully immerse yourself.

Ok, now that you are convinced, when should you go? Croatia’s mild Mediterranean climate makes it ideal to visit all year but the shoulder seasons of May-Jun for September-October are best if you want smaller crowds and prices are more reasonable. I also highly recommend booking your trip 6 to 9 months in advanced to secure the best hotel options and tour guides. Croatia is a rising star in Europe, so demand is climbing, and I want to ensure you have the best experience possible!
